MLA 2002, Dallas
Outreach SIG Meeting
May 20, 2002, 5:45 - 7:00 pm
OLD BUSINESS
Outreach/AHEC Directory:
The meeting began with a discussion of the Directory and its status. Rita
Smith reported that Susan Poorbaugh has coordinated it in the past. The
Directory is available at http://www.mcg.edu/AHEC/AHECDirectory/directoryindex.htm.
Expansion of the directory has been under discussion for several years; one
issue is whether to include the circuit rider librarians, some of whom work as
private contractors or consultants. Meeting attendees were encouraged to send
their info for the directory to Susan Poorbaugh via email at spoorbau@mail.mcg.edu.
OUTLIB-L:
As of May 13, 2002, the list had 220 subscribers listed. Instructions for
joining are at http://gain.mercer.edu/mla/outreachsig/resources.htm.
Cathy Burroughs was encouraged to post her outreach evaluation materials to the
list.
Outreach SIG Web Page:
http://gain.mercer.edu/mla/outreachsig/
Rita Smith distributed copies of the web site pages and asked for suggestions
and comments.
NEW BUSINESS
Program Planning Process for Annual Meetings
The group discussed the fact that the SIG can only co-sponsor meeting sessions.
Keith Cogdill is chair of the Medical Library Education Section and will be
attending a program planning meeting. He will be on the lookout for
opportunities for the Outreach SIG to co-sponsor, as will Cathy Burroughs, who
is on the 2004 planning committee.
More Outreach SIG Meetings During Annual Meeting?
The need for more time together as a group at the annual meetings was discussed.
The group decided to plan a social outing at the next annual meeting to give
attendees more time to share and discuss various efforts in outreach. The
regularly planned Outreach SIG meeting will take place as well. Each event will
have its own convener.
Recruiting Outreach SIG Members
Suggestions for recruiting more members were discussed. They included flyers at
the annual meeting, postings to MEDLIB-L, and announcements at AHEC national
meeting. Possible recruiting using consumer health and public health was
discussed.
Kathleen McCloskey - Report on Outreach Meeting in Salt Lake City
Kathleen McCloskey discussed Tribal Connections, a new outreach initiative
involving 4 of NLM's Regional Medical Libraries, which will address needs of
American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Participants met in Salt Lake
City on April 19, 2002 to discuss the program. Plans discussed include a
listserv, monthly teleconferences, training and education, symposiums, and
involvement of the Native American community.
Conveners for San Diego, MLA 2003
Winn Theirl at the University of Kentucky has volunteered to convene if someone
else will share responsibility. Jack Raines of UNTHSC in Ft. Worth volunteered
to co-convene.
Other Business
It was announced that there was no DeBakey Outreach Award for 2001.
The meeting adjourned at 7:00 pm.
